Need for normative models

Written by yanglu on March 04, 2009 13:22

"'Real life' is always 'my life' -- 'my life' is real." The answers are very complex -- people writing headlines don't like complex answers. Richard Bartle: mech30. I toyed with using a female avatar tonight, but I thought I'd go with an absolute vanilla male instead. Interesting to see the early reactions, where people validated their own self-view by commenting on my appearance as I was basically functioning without having a fancy avatar attached. After our "high energy" presentation, the questions were even stranger. Someone asked why humanities research got left out, and we had to say that we couldn't find it to be directly relevant on our top 10 list of bulleted points.

Need for longitudinal work

Richard Bartle: yes, yes, that multi-conversation thing predates even MUD1 but if I could change how you appeared without your knowing? After our "high energy" presentation, the questions were even stranger. Someone asked why humanities research got left out, and we had to say that we couldn't find it to be directly relevant on our top 10 list of bulleted points. Ian made the point, and I agreed, that doing the research for this panel made us think differently about academic research. While I'm not going to say that what we've done personally has no value, it was a definite challenge to try and make it *directly relevant* in a BULLETED POINT for developers.

A story: WoW -- young man gets into it and finds that the more you do it, the more you want to keep doing it. The grind as requiring increased investments. Goes Meta -- why do we need to do this. Effects of games. "Fear-mongering" in mass media. Dmitri's work shows that the effects of these spaces is very nuanced. Jack, Will, Jefferey -- reacting to the notion of games as substance. After our "high energy" presentation, the questions were even stranger. Putnam: strange increases from the newbies. Explaination: sense of efficacy -- they can affect change in a group. After our "high energy" presentation, the questions were even stranger. Self-report first

Bad: expensive, time, guild may be run by 16-year old kids [Ted says this--laughter], flames, kill-stealing, addiction -- becoming meaner and more cruel, non-gamers don't understand, play as a couple. (Note about how playing as a couple is bad/strange for games -- okay for golf). Physically harmed by not moving -- repetitive strain injuries. [Ted wants "addictive" in the positive column.] Frustration with the game -- game is not good enough. After our "high energy" presentation, the questions were even stranger. Someone asked why humanities research got left out, and we had to say that we couldn't find it to be directly relevant on our top 10 list of bulleted points. Richard Bartle: Sophie. OK, in that case why aren't you using a vanilla character like I am? After our "high energy" presentation, the questions were even stranger. Raising Game Birds

Maybe the issue is the "larger" community. It's always easy to abstract and oversimplify at that level. But I know that on an individual level, there are real conversations and collaborations going on. I don't want this to turn into some rosy "it's better than we think" or "can't we all just get along" thing, but I do think that perhaps the situation is not as dire as it's hyped to be. But then again, I haven't gotte my evals back yet.
